The Scouts work towards a number of different types of badges.
Activity Badges are awarded for demonstrating proficiency at a particular skill. Some Activity Badges are staged and are available across all sections from Beaver through to Explorer. Most Activity Badges are available to only one section.
Challenge badges generally require more work than activity badges and are awarded vary rarely.
There are also a number of themed group awards which require sections to work together.
Each section has the Chief Scout Award as the sectional top award. Beavers do the Chief Scout's Bronze award, Cubs the Chief Scout Silver Award, Scout's the Chief Scout's Gold Award and For Explorers its the Chief Scouts Platinum and Diamond Awards. The very top award is the Queen's Scout Award.
For Scouts to gain the Chief Scout's Gold Award they need to complete the Six compulsory Challenge badges, one from each program zone plus two optional challenge badges from the outdoors and adventure zone.
