pic
pic
Being a member of the young leader unit is an excellent way of staying in contact with your group.  The young leader unit will only meet for occasional training sessions.  The rest of the time you will be working as a young leader helping to run a colony, pack or troop.  You can also be a member of one of the regular Explorer Scout units or go on any of the activities that are arranged for explorer scouts.

There are a few restrictions on young leaders.  You must complete the initial young leader training module within three months of starting to help in a section. You cannot help in a Scout Troop you have just left, You must first leave completely for a minimum of six months before going back to your old troop as a young leader.  This doesn't stop you helping run your old cub pack or another troop in the meantime.

As a Young Leader the other Explorer Units and meetings are always open to you.

We hope that our young leaders will be our leaders of the future.  Once you are 18 you can chose to take out a warrant and become a fully fledged leader.  The training you have done as part of the Explorer Scout Young leader scheme will count as credits towards adult leader training and may exempt you from certain parts of some courses.

Of course your work as a young leader will also count towards your Platinum and Diamond chief Scouts awards as well as your Queens Scout award and Duke of Edinburgh's Awards.

pic

Q. Do all young people between the ages of 14-18, who help at a Colony, Pack or Troop, need to be Explorer Scout Young Leaders?
A. In the majority of cases any young person, who chooses to help with any of the three younger Sections, must be registered with a Young Leader Unit. This technically makes them an Explorer Scout allthough they do not have to attend meetings of unit J and M. There are however some exceptions to this. A Member of a Guide Company, who is helping at a Beaver or Cub Scout meeting as part of a service project, required for a specific award, will not need to become an Explorer Scout. Equally, a young person over the age of 16, not part of the Scout or Guide Movement, who is completing the service requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, may also work for the duration of the service period within the Section, without becoming an Explorer Scout. However in the case of Duke of Edinburgh's Award participants they must attend Young Leader training. Leaders are reminded that all young people assisting in any form of instructional or leadership role, must understand the Association's Young People First policy, as summarised on the yellow card. This may best be achieved by attending the appropriate Young Leader's Training Module.

Q. If I am a Young Leader do I have to pay Subs?
A. Not in our District, Young Leader training is free. If you are also a member of Unit M or J then you will pay subs to them. If you are not a member of Unit M or J then the group you work as a Young Leader in will need to pay your membership fees at the end of each year. Groups do not have to pay membership fees for Duke of Edinburgh Award participants so long as their period of working does not exceed the requirements of the award to which they are working.

Q. Why do I have to take a six-month break before working as a Young Leader in my Scout Troop?
A. It will take some time for the Scouts who have known you as a PL or just another Scout to adjust to the slight change in relationship that you will have with them now that you are a Young Leader. A Six-month break will make this easier. You can work in a Pack or Colony during this Six-month break.

Q. Do I have to attend all Young Leader Unit Meetings.
A. No. You can skip meetings if you are busy. A lot of Explorers do this during Exam time. The YL training Scheme is designed to be worked through at your own pace and you have until you are 18 to finish it. If you are using the YL Scheme for your D of E service remember that you have to complete a set amount of modules as the training portion of the Service. See the D of E web site for requirements for service with the Scout Association.

Q. I don't want anything to do with the districts Explorer Scout section, I just want to help run a colony, pack or troop.
A. All young people assisting in any form of instructional or a helper leadership role, must understand the Association's Young People First policy and various other basic principals of Scouting. This is best achieved by attending the Young Leader's Training Module A. Module A. can be delivered in one meeting of the Districts Young Leader Unit. After completing Module A. you don't have to attend any more Young Leader meetings or any other Explorer Scout activities however we believe you are missing out on a useful training scheme if you don't attend YL meetings.

Q. Do Young Leaders Need to be declared on the census?
A. Yes although strictly speaking they should appear on the District Census so please ensure the District Explorer Scout Commissioner Knows about them.

Q. I have seen some Explorers wearing the YL badge. How do I get one?
A. The YL badge can be awarded to anyone who completes module A. of the Young Leader Scheme. If you have already completed this and not been awarded the badge ask the YL trainers to get you one. There are two versions of the YL badge. The cloth badge can be worn on the Explorer Scout uniform. The Pin badge is for Guides or Duke of Edinburgh Award participants who are helping as Young Leaders and Complete Module A.

Q. I am a young leader and I keep hearing about camps and activities the Explorer Units get up to. I don't want to go to Explorer meetings every week but I would like to join them on camp occasionally.
A. All District and County Explorer Scout events are open to young leaders too. You can find out details of various events from the DESC or one of the unit Leaders.

fdl BS   DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME IN ROMFORD DISTRICT
BS
BS

Many of you will have already heard about or started the Duke of Edinburgh Award, however for those of you who don't know about it, here's a quick summary of the scheme:

dofe

The Scheme

The D of E scheme is open to anyone aged between 14 and 25. There are three levels to complete, Bronze, Silver and Gold. The higher the award the more work required and the greater the sense of achievement when you pass.

Each award has four sections which you will need to complete:

  1. Service
  2. Skill
  3. Physical Recreation
  4. Expedition.

In addition, the Gold award has an extra section - The Residential Experience.

Each Award takes on average one year to complete, although you can take as long as you like to complete them so long as you finish it by the time you are 25!

Why Do The D of E?

The D of E Scheme allows you to try out new activities, meet new people, explore new places and most of all prove that you can take on a challenge!

The D of E Awards are recognised by colleges, universities and employers. If you have any D of E Awards you will stand out from the crowd, so it's well worth completing them.

In addition, the new Explorer Badge Scheme is centred around the D of E Scheme. Once you have completed the Bronze Award you need only do a couple of traditional Scouting activities and you will have completed the Platinum Chief Scouts Award as well.

What Can I Do For My Award?

Often you will already be doing something that can count towards your Award. For example if you already play a musical instrument you can use this as your skill as long as you can show you have improved over the appropriate time period.

Many people however use the D of E scheme as an opportunity to try out something new, discover new talents and learn new skills.

To give you an idea of what you can do here's some examples of what Romford District D of E participants are currently undertaking:

SkillService Physical Recreation
Spanish Running a basketball club for young people Climbing
Model Making Life Saving Cycling
DJ'ing Being a Young Leader with a Cub Pack Swimming
Learning to drive Running a children's play scheme Yoga
Website Design Working on a campsite service crew. Gym Workouts

Whether it's a traditional craft or a new sport craze, we can make a program for you!

A Pick and Mix Award

You design your own Award and work through it at your own pace. So if you want to DJ for your skill, hand glide for your physical recreation or be a Young Leader at your old Cub Pack for your service, we'll help you find the right assessor and work through your Award until you finish it, providing as little or as much support as you need.

The D of E Award Scheme is supposed to be a challenge to all who undertake it, however more importantly it is supposed to be enjoyable!

You set your own goals and as long as you can show you have aimed to complete these goals and have shown improvement along the way, you will achieve your Award.

So What Do I Do Now?

Whether you want more information on the Award, or want to sign up and 'Take the Challenge', the first step is to contact Angela Austin (Romford District D of E Advisor). You can email her at DofE@RomExp.org.uk

Angela can provide you with general information about the scheme, send you D of E info sheets, help you decide what activities you would like to do for the Award, put you in touch with an appropriate assessor, and help you keep on track with your award.

What If I need Help With The Award?

If you have any questions or difficulties with the Award you can email Angela.

In addition, Angela is available most Thursdays for a 'D of E Drop In'. 'The Drop In' is from 9 - 10pm at Rowswell Hall, St Michael's Church, Main Rd, Gidea Park.

If you are planning to visit the drop in please let Angela know in advance what you need to see her about. This firstly ensure she is there and not eating ice cream in the pub and secondly will help her bring the right information along for you. If you can't let her know in advance, don't worry, it just means that you may not get the answer to your question straight away.
