The winning team for the Explorer event contained an ex-3rd Scout. Our winning Scout team did so well, they would have come 3rd in the Explorer event.

SUNDAY MARCH 25th

19 Scouts from 3GP formed four teams for the 2018 Romford District Scouts Orienteering Competition in South Weald park. Quite a few members of our squad were entering for the first time and representing the troop for the first time in any event.

There were 20 teams of Scouts and each team was given two hours to find as many of the 14 checkpoints as possible. 3rd Gidea park came 1st and 2nd and had a third team in the top ten.

As well as counting towards the Orienteering badge the event covers parts of the Adventure Challenge and Teamwork Challenge Badges.

Six of our Beavers attended the District Beaver Scout Sports day which was held on the field outside the 2nd Collier Row Scout group headquarters.

The beavers each had to take part in a space hopper race, a sprint, an egg and spoon race, (one beaver was a bit nervous as we were using real spoons!) a sack race and a relay race.

At the end of the afternoon the scores were added up and the 3rd Gidea Park colony was found to have scored highest. During the closing ceremony the excited beavers were presented with the Bill Archer trophy by the District Commissioner.

LEADER

SUNDAY JULY 16th 2006

Nine members of 3rd Gidea Park took part in the Greater London North East County Canoe Race. The race follows a seven mile course up stream along the river chelmer. This is no easy challenge, even the best competitors took over two and a half hours to complete the course.

To make things worse, the canonists have to get out and carry their boats around a number of locks along the way.

SCOUT

Duncan won the leaders class of entry and one of our young leaders won the Explorer class of entry. Our Scouts came 2nd and 3rd. For the older Scouts this river trip was the final part of their BCU two star award.

 RON BARTON CHALLENGE 2006 Scouts
Barton 3rd Gidea Park entered three teams into this year's Barton challenge. The teams camped overnight at Crow camp and on Sunday we moved off to South Weald country park. Here extra teams including a fourth from 3GP joined us for the District Orienteering Competition. This is a separate event in its own right but this year the points gained in orienteering would be incorporated into the Barton Challenge score to find an eventual winner. We won the Bill Adams Trophy for Orienteering a record equalling 7th time and for the second year in a row. One of our other teams came second too!

We also won the Ron Barton Challenge for the first time since 1980, with 1st Romford coming second and one of our other teams coming 3rd.

With the Forest Boundary hike this completed a very successful weekend for 3rd Gidea Park Scouts with us winning three trophies.

Friday June 16th

A team consisting of two leaders and one Scout too part in the Ilford North Forest Boundary hike.

The ten mile course was completed in just under two and a half hours with each team member carrying 20lbs (9.5kg) in weight in our rucksacks.

We beat the unit M Explorers (who only had to carry 15lbs) by a quarter of an hour.

THE GLNE SCRAP HEAP CHALLENGE 2006 Cubs
Three of our cubs joined with three others to form a district six in the first ever 'County Scrap Heap Challenge' at Gilwell Park. Cubs and their 'Technical Experts' were given the task of building a four foot long boat from recycled materials. Teams were given half an hour to plan before scavenging and construction commenced. After 45 minutes the technical experts left the teams to it before return to advise in the final stages of construction. Finally the boats were floated around the bomb hole and the Romford team was judged to be the best. Well done to the cubs!

SUNDAY OCTOBER 16th

The Scouts entered two teams into the County Orienteering competition in Epping Forest. This year the district competition was combined with the county event so the best team from Romford would take home the Bill Adams trophy. Both our teams managed to find all the checkpoints and finish in less than the two hour time limit.

A team from Chingford won as they got all the checkpoints and were the fastest back but our teams finished 2nd and 3rd in the county. We were the fastest Romford District team so we won the District Trophy.

 COUNTY CANOE RACE 2005 Scouts
Trophy

Two of our older Scouts and three of the Explorers entered the county canoe race. The course is along seven miles of the River Chelmer out in Essex. Every few miles competitors have to jump (or fall) out of their canoes, pick them up and run around the locks before getting back in.

The canoeing course at Fairlop has obviously helped as Gidea Park Scouts came first and Second in the Scout class of entry and not far behind some of the Explorers from unit M.

THE ILFORD NORTH FOREST BOUNDARY HIKE 2005 Scouts

For the first time in a few years the Scouts entered a team in the Forest Boundary Hike. This is an event for teams of Scouts, Explorers, Networkers and Leaders.

The teams have to hike around a 10 mile course in less than four hours. Each team member has to carry a certain weight in their rucksacks. Scouts have to cary 10Lbs (4.5Kg) Explorers 15Lbs and Leaders 20Lbs. The Scouts set off first but quickly became unstuck taking a wrong turn. Finally a leader team consisting of Mark and Dunks from the 3GP Scout Leadership team and Craig from the 2nd Collier Row leadership team. The Scouts only made it to the 2nd checkpoint. Like many a 3GP team before them they took a wrong turning and never made it to checkpoint three.

The leaders finished around midnight and were fastest by just two minutes. The Explorers won the Explorer trophy for the third year in a row, only about 5 minutes slower than the leaders.

 THE FRANKLIN SHIELD 2005 Scouts

Franklin

Over the weekend of April 29th to May 1st the troop entered two teams into the Franklin Shield competition. The event which lasts two days tests all manner of Scouting and camping skills. Both our teams finished in the top half of the results table with one of them winning the event by just one point from second Romford.

 THE DISTRICT CHESS 2005 Scouts

19 Scouts from 8 troops competed for the coveted title of grand master of Romford District. The 3GP team consisted of no less than six Scouts. It was a 3GP Scout who won the closely run contest and he will be joined by one other from Gidea Park on the Districts four man team at the county finals.

 THE COOKING COMPETITION 2004 Scouts

Cooking

The 3GP Scouts entered the district indoor cooking competition at Gilwell Park. We have won the camp cooking competition for a two years but the indoor cooking has constantly eluded us. We don't normally feature in the top half of the results table but this year our team pulled out all the stops serving up the traditional 3GP starter of mushrooms and blanched tomato topped with chesse, followed by a tasty creamy pasta dish for main and a surprisingly good banana crumble for sweet course. This is the first time we have ever won the cooking competition so well done to the team and the other members of the troop who helped us practice.

THE COUNTY CANOE RACE 2004 Scouts

One of our older Scouts has been linking with the Explorer section for the last month. He joined the District Explorers at this year's county canoe race. He was the fastest Scout to canoe 7 miles along the River Chelmer in a regular kayak and so brought the trophy back to Gidea Park.

This event hasn't been run since 1999 when it was also won by a 3GP Scout. This year, one of our leaders Andy Lannin won the leaders race for a closed cockpit kayak.

Angela and Mark from the Scout Leadership team won the leaders race for a canadian style open cockpit canoe. Two thunderstorms hit the Chelmer Valley as we paddled up stream but this didn't put our determined canoeists off. Congratulations to the other members of the Romford Explorer team who also completed the race.

Our Group Scout Leader was once again pleased to be able to receive the trophy and show it to all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from 3rd Gidea Park.

THE SWIMMING GALA 2000 Cubs Scouts

Saturday evening saw the Cubs swimming Gala immediately followed by the Scouts and Ventures Swimming Gala. The cubs swam their best and managed to come a very commendable second place.

The Scouts team who had practiced a week before were spurred on by Allen Mathews decision to compete in the leaders race. However stiff competition meant the scouts were only able to equal the cubs score of second place.

However once the Cub and Scout scores were added together it was found that we were once again over all district champions! Congratulations to all the cubs scouts and leaders who took part.

Scout

So why should they be immortalised in shinny Gold lettering in the hall of shame? Why should they be raised on a pedestal of indignity as an ignominious example to us all? Because they lost the overall winners trophy for the first time since 1994!

What gives them the front row seats with waitress service and complimentary drinks in the hall of shame, followed by a fast track crash course to ridicule is the fact that they were beaten by a team of Scouts!

On the plus side it was the 3rd Gidea Park Scouts who beat them and became the first and only Scout Team ever to win the Lionel Samsum Memorial Cup.
